Eight charged in Florida teen's boot camp death

"TAMPA, Florida (CNN) -- Eight former employees of the Bay County Sheriff's Office were charged Tuesday with aggravated manslaughter in the death of a 14-year-old at a Florida boot camp for juvenile offenders.

State Attorney Mark Ober said seven former guards and a nurse are accused of causing the death of Martin Anderson by "culpable negligence." If convicted, each could face up to 30 years in prison.

Anderson collapsed January 5 at the sheriff's office Boot Camp program in Panama City, Florida. He had complained of breathing difficulties while running around a track as part of the entry process on his first day at the facility. He was taken to a hospital and died early the next day.

BU group offers white scholarship

"Looking to draw attention to what they call the "worst form of bigotry confronting America today," Boston University's College Republicans are circulating an application for a "Caucasian Achievement and Recognition Scholarship" that requires applicants be at least 25 percent Caucasian.

"Did we do this to give a scholarship to white kids? Of course not," the scholarship reads. "Did we do it to trigger a discussion on what we believe to be the morally wrong practice of basing decisions in our schools and our jobs on racial preferences rather than merit? Absolutely."

The scholarship, which is privately funded by the BUCR without the support of the university, is meant to raise awareness, group members say. BUCR member argue that racial preferences are a form of "bigotry." The group has a similar view on affirmative action.

The application for the $250 scholarship, due Nov. 30, requires applicants be full-time BU undergraduate students and one-fourth Caucasian and maintain at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA. Applicants must submit two essays, one describing the applicant's ancestry and one describing "what it means to you to be a Caucasian-American today."

"Kramer's" Racist Tirade -- Caught on Tape

Richards, who played the wacky Cosmo Kramer on the hit TV show "Seinfeld," appeared onstage at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood. Kyle Doss, an African-American, told TMZ he and some friends were in the cheap seats and he was playfully heckling Richards when suddenly, the comedian lost it. The camera started rolling just as Richards began his attack, screaming at one of the men, "Fifty years ago we'd have you upside down with a f***ing fork up your ass." Richards continued, "You can talk, you can talk, you're brave now motherf**ker. Throw his ass out. He's a nigger! He's a nigger! He's a nigger! A nigger, look, there's a nigger!"

The crowd is visibly and audibly confused and upset. Richards responds by saying, "They're going to arrest me for calling a black man a nigger."

"LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Michael Richards said Monday he spewed racial epithets during a stand-up comedy routine because he lost his cool while being heckled and not because he's a bigot.

"For me to be at a comedy club and flip out and say this crap, I'm deeply, deeply sorry," the former "Seinfeld" co-star said during a satellite appearance for David Letterman's "Late Show."

"I'm not a racist. That's what's so insane about this," Richards said, his tone becoming angry and frustrated as he defended himself in a clip from the show played on CBS before "Late Show" aired Monday night.

Richards described himself as going into "a rage" over the two audience members who interrupted his act Friday at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood. Richards responded to the black hecklers with repeated use of the "n word" and profanities."

'Evil' teen jailed for savage party beating

HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- A teenager described as a white supremacist was sentenced Friday to life in prison for savagely beating and sodomizing a Hispanic boy at a drug-fueled party.

David Henry Tuck, 18, was convicted Thursday of aggravated sexual assault in the near-fatal attack. Witnesses testified that he hurled racial insults and shouted "white power" while sodomizing the 17-year-old victim with the plastic pole of a patio umbrella.

Prosecutor Mike Trent told the jury that Tuck's history of violence showed he is beyond rehabilitation and would commit more attacks if released.

COP 'RACE' FIGHT CAUGHT ON FILM

"November 3, 2006 -- A series of dramatic photos shows the chilling, race-fueled Halloween melee that erupted between a black plainclothes cop and a crowd of white residents in Queens after the officer's car was pelted with eggs by a Halloween prankster.

In the most graphic and disturbing photo, obtained by The Post, Detective Marques Stewart, his police badge clearly showing over a Seton Hall sweatshirt, is holding a police radio in one hand and his nightstick in the other as he fends off the encroaching crowd of 100 angry Broad Channel residents.

A handcuffed Nicholas Stack, 16, is lying on the ground at the detective's feet.


Four residents, including Stack, were arrested in the bloody melee.

Stack, released on bail yesterday, said he did nothing to provoke the beating.

"I put up my hands and he hit me with the baton in the head, and I fell down and he hit me again in the legs," he said.


Assistant Police Chief Michael Collins defended the police officer's actions.

"The pictures show an officer being assaulted and attacked by members of the community as he attempted to effect an arrest," the police spokesman said.


Patricia Rich, 44, arrested along with her son, Patrick, 17, said the photos prove that the 15-year-veteran cop overreacted when his unmarked car was pelted with eggs by a prankster.

Stewart was questioning Rich about the egg-tossing incident when her son allegedly jumped on the officer's back and started screaming to onlookers, "Yo boys, don't let them take my moms" and "Kill the n - - - - r" and "Get the n - - - - r," police said. Patricia Rich denied the confrontation was racially charged.

"We're not racists. It's all lies. The pictures speak for themselves," she said.


A fourth suspect, Robert Glade, 22, was also arrested, accused of hurling racial slurs at Stewart.

In 1997, Stewart was cited by the Civilian Complaint Review Board for knocking out a suspect's teeth with his gun, but the NYPD dismissed the charge.
